Do you take extra time to add personal details to your garments or do you just want it complete and ready to take out into the world ASAP?!
To be honest, with me it’s a bit of both. I’m a sucker for a last minute make for an event, which will have me up until the early hours of the morning just to complete it in time.. But if I have the luxury of time, there is nothing I love more than personalising a me-made piece of clothing with anything from bias bound seams, a bit of embroidery or hacking the pattern to better suit me in some way.
The paNtS!
The Terra Pants by Pattern Fantastique have been waiting patiently on my to-make list for a while. Then the Sew Fancy Pants challenge taking place this month on Instagram (see more details at the end of the post) gave me the push I needed to make them!
They are the first trousers I’ve made (that haven’t been for a little person) and I think that’s why they kept slipping down my list. In the end they came together very easily! It was such fun making them especially because I had a vision for the tweaks I wanted to make and I was keen to see if they’d work..
The details!
I used the offcuts of this Dogulee Print by Mannine from another make and added them to the pants corners at the pockets and onto the upturned cuffs.
This was super easy to do as the pants corners are a separate pattern piece – so I just swapped out the fabric and interfaced it so that it had enough structure next to the denim.
For the cuffs, I appliquéd the designer fabric to the outside of the front and back pants pieces, where the pattern showed interfacing was needed for the cuffs and extended it a little at the top and bottom to ensure that it wrapped over the fold of the cuff.
I added some fun embroidery to one of the pockets.., because, why wouldn’t you?! I love seeing my machine in action like this and don’t use the function nearly enough.
Finally, I didn’t have enough Mannine fabric left for the pocket bags and zip facing. So I shopped my stash and found this raspberry toned fairy print left over from a little girl’s birthday present make. Adding yet another layer of fun!
The result..
These Terra Pants have become my new favourite pants! I love the slouchy, relaxed fit of them combined with the bright colour and the pops of designer fabric! They’re unlike anything else in my wardrobe and they put a smile on my face every time I reach for them.
